On Typed Calculi with a Merge Operator
نویسنده
چکیده
Extensions of the simply typed lambda calculus with a merge operator are de ned and investigated. A merge of functions denotes a function which can be applied to more than one type and computes the result by merging the results of the component functions. We propose rst two calculi in which the inconsistency between the return values of the component functions is solved using a non-symmetric rule, and show that they do not have good proof-theoretic properties: one does not have the Strong Normalization Property, and the other does not have the Transitivity of Coercions Property. Then, using the type system, we restrict the two calculi in a way that terms which may cause inconsistency are excluded, and show that the two calculi become equivalent and have all the desired properties. A merge of functions in object oriented programming corresponds to writing a method in a subclass by modifying those in superclasses, and the above restriction corresponds to only allowing adding some behaviors in the modi cation. This result conforms with the programming methodology in which one should write a subclass method so that it does not override the behavior of superclass methods.

Labeling techniques and typed fixed-point operators
Labeling techniques for untyped lambda calculus were developed by Lévy, Hyland, Wadsworth and others in the 1970’s. A typical application is the proof of confluence from finiteness of developments: by labeling each subterm with a natural number indicating the maximum number of times this term may participate in a reduction step, we obtain a strongly-normalizing approximation of β, η -reduction....
متن کاملExtracting Constructive Content from Classical Logic via Control-like Reductions
Recently there has been much interest in the problem of nding the computational content of classical reasoning. One of the most appealing directions for the computer scientist to tackle such a problem is the relation which has been established between classical logic and lambda calculi with control operators, like Felleisen's control operator C. In this paper we introduce a typed lambda calculu...
متن کاملCompleteness of Pruning Methods for Consequence Finding Procedure Sol ?
In this paper, we study the completeness of several types of pruning methods for the logical consequence nding procedure SOL-resolution. The consequence nd-ing problem is a generalization of the refutation nding problem. The SOL-resolution is a Model-Elimination-like calculus with Skip operation, and is one of the most signiicant calculi for consequence nding. The concept \completeness" of cons...
متن کاملA Pseudo-differential Calculus on Graded Nilpotent Lie Groups
In this paper, we present first results of our investigation regarding symbolic pseudo-differential calculi on nilpotent Lie groups. On any graded Lie group, we define classes of symbols using difference operators. The operators are obtained from these symbols via the natural quantisation given by the representation theory. They form an algebra of operators which shares many properties with the...
متن کاملA call-by-value lambda-calculus with lists and control
Calculi with control operators have been studied to reason about control in programming languages and to interpret the computational content of classical proofs. To make these calculi into a real programming language, one should also include data types. As a step into that direction, this paper defines a simply typed call-by-value λ -calculus with the control operators catch and throw, a data t...
